Over the past few weeks we’ve been talking about how to use social media for your stationery business. We’ve covered a lot — how to optimize your profile, refine your bio, curate your photos, and create content that truly reflects the heart of your brand. The goal? To attract and connect with the right people.
While posting consistently is important, there’s another key factor that determines how many people actually see that content: engagement.
Today I want to share 2 options to engagement on your social media:
Before we get into the how, let’s talk about why engagement matters so much.
The entire point of social media was socialization. These platforms were created for conversation, connection, and community. And while social media has evolved over time, its core purpose remains the same—people want to interact, not just consume.
Think about how you use social media after a long day. You probably want to unwind, grab your favorite drink, and scroll through something fun, entertaining, or relaxing—not necessarily be sold to.
Now, that doesn’t mean selling on social media doesn’t work (because it absolutely does!). When you’re aligned with the right audience, they want to hear about your offers. They want to know if what you’re selling can solve their problem.
But sales happen in the right context. (Next week we’ll dive into this more!)
For now, we need to focus on using the platform the way it was intended—because the better you engage, the more your content will be seen. And the more people who see your content, the more likely you are to attract your ideal clients and grow your business.
We all know that posts with high engagement get pushed out to more people. More engagement means more visibility.
So, if commenting on other people’s posts and getting them to comment on yours is key to growing your reach, the question is: How do we actually make that happen?
I’m not talking about generic, inauthentic comment chains, basic, low-effort comments, or overused ManyChat keywords.
Those tactics can sometimes work, but what we really want to focus on is thoughtful, intentional, and meaningful engagement—real conversations that actually matter.
The best engagement comes from questions, discussions, and even respectful disagreements. Anything that gets people thinking is worth incorporating into your social media strategy.
And yes, even as a wedding stationer, there are plenty of ways to start these conversations. Ever asked people their thoughts on QR codes for RSVPs? That alone can stir up some strong opinions.
If you want more eyes on your content, you need to make it engaging enough for people to stop scrolling and interact with it. Here are some ways to do that:
1. Ask Thought-Provoking Questions
Encourage discussion by asking questions that go beyond a simple yes/no answer. For example:
People love to share opinions, so give them a reason to weigh in!
2. Share a Bold Statement or Controversial Take
Nothing gets people talking like a topic they have feelings about. Consider posting about a common wedding etiquette debate or an industry trend and inviting your audience to discuss.
3. Use Instagram Polls & Question Boxes
Stories are a goldmine for engagement because they make it easy for people to interact with you. Try adding a poll, slider, or question box to get quick responses from your audience.
4. Reply to Every Comment
If someone takes the time to comment on your post, reply to them! This keeps the conversation going and signals to the algorithm that your content is valuable.
The more you encourage thoughtful conversations, the more likely your posts will be seen and engaged with. Social media platforms recognize when people stop scrolling to interact with your content, and that signals to the algorithm that your posts are worth sharing with more people.
Now, let’s talk about the other side of engagement—how you interact with other people’s content. Because while getting engagement on your own posts is important, engaging with others can bring new eyes to your business, too.
Here’s how to do it strategically:
1. Comment on Industry-Aligned Accounts
Find and engage with wedding planners, florists, and photographers who serve the same type of clients you do. Leave thoughtful comments on their posts—not just “Love this!” but something that adds to the conversation.
For example:
When you comment meaningfully, their followers (aka potential clients) might see your name and check out your profile.
2. Engage with Instagram Stories
Replying to Stories is one of the easiest ways to start conversations. Whether it’s responding to a poll, answering a question box, or just reacting to something fun, these small interactions help build relationships over time.
3. Be a Regular Presence
The more consistently you engage, the more people will start to recognize and remember your name. Try spending just 5-10 minutes per day engaging with your dream clients and vendor connections.
When you do these 3 things consistently, not only are you forming connections, but you’re also signaling to the algorithm that you’re an active user—helping your own content get seen more, too.
It doesn’t take a ton of effort to make a large impact on your social media engagement. When you create content that invites conversation and take the time to engage with others, you’ll naturally start building relationships that turn into inquiries and bookings.
Here are a few ways to increase engagement on your own posts:
